Tracking & Analytics

Are Your Enquiries Actually Being Tracked? Conversion Tracking for Small Businesses

If you cannot see which channel produced an enquiry, every marketing decision you make is a guess. Tracking is the least glamorous part of digital marketing and the one I fix first in almost every account I take on.

The short version

  • Without reliable conversion tracking, you cannot tell what is working, and Google's automated bidding cannot either.
  • Track every way a customer gets in touch: forms, calls, WhatsApp, emails and bookings.
  • Google Analytics 4, Google Tag Manager and Google Ads conversion tracking together cover most small businesses.
  • Test your tracking every month by making a real enquiry yourself.

Why tracking matters more than anything else

Google Ads' automated bidding learns from the conversions you tell it about. If those conversions are wrong, missing or duplicated, it learns the wrong lessons and spends your money chasing them. The same goes for your own decisions: without accurate tracking you might switch off the campaign that was quietly producing your best customers.

What should count as a conversion

A conversion is an action that shows a real intent to buy. For most small businesses that means:

  • Contact form submissions that actually send.
  • Phone calls from ads, and clicks on phone numbers on your website.
  • WhatsApp and email clicks.
  • Bookings made through a calendar or booking tool.
  • Purchases, for businesses that sell online.

Things like page views, time on site or scrolling are useful signals, but they should never be set as the main conversions your ads optimise towards. Keep them as secondary actions so they do not distort your bidding.

The setup I use

  1. Google Tag Manager. One container on the site that manages all your tracking tags, so changes do not need a developer each time.
  2. Google Analytics 4. Records every visit and every enquiry, and shows which channel each came from.
  3. Google Ads conversion tracking. Sends your key enquiry actions directly into Google Ads, so bidding learns from real results.
  4. Enhanced conversions. Improves accuracy by securely matching enquiries to ad clicks where cookies alone fall short.
  5. Call tracking. Google forwarding numbers on ads, and phone-click tracking on the site, so calls are counted alongside forms.
  6. Consent mode. For UK businesses, a compliant cookie banner connected to Google's consent mode, so tracking respects visitors' choices while still giving Google modelled data.

The tracking failures I see most often

  • Thank-you pages counted every time they load, so one enquiry is recorded several times.
  • The same conversion tracked twice, once by a Google Ads tag and again by an import from Analytics.
  • Booking tools in embedded frames that never pass the conversion back to your site.
  • Calls not tracked at all, which makes channels that drive phone enquiries look far worse than they are.
  • Forms that do not actually send. The tracking fires, the dashboard looks healthy and the enquiry disappears.

Test it yourself

Once a month, fill in your own contact form, click your own phone number and make a test booking. Then check the enquiry arrived and the conversion appeared in your reports. Ten minutes a month can save you months of lost leads.

Close the loop: which enquiries became customers?

Counting enquiries is good. Knowing which ones turned into paying work is far better. Ask every new customer how they found you and note it alongside their job value. If you use a CRM, record the source automatically. With enough data, you can even feed won jobs back into Google Ads as offline conversions, so it learns to find more of your best customers rather than more form fillers.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need Google Analytics if I already use Google Ads?

Yes. Google Ads only sees its own traffic. Google Analytics shows how every channel performs, including SEO, social and your Business Profile, so you can compare them fairly.

Is call tracking worth it for a small business?

If customers phone you, absolutely. Without it, calls from your marketing are invisible and you risk cutting a channel that is actually working.

What is consent mode and do I need it?

Consent mode tells Google whether a visitor has accepted cookies and adjusts tracking accordingly. UK businesses advertising with Google should have it in place alongside a compliant cookie banner.
