Local Services Ads: Are They Worth It for UK Small Businesses?

Local Services Ads sit at the very top of some Google searches, carry a verification badge and charge you per lead rather than per click. For the right small business, they are one of the best-value channels Google offers.

The short version

  • You pay for leads such as calls and messages, not for clicks.
  • They are only available for certain service categories, mainly trades and home services in the UK.
  • Verification checks on your business and insurance take time, so start early.
  • Reviews, responsiveness and an accurate profile have a big influence on where you appear.

What Local Services Ads are

Local Services Ads are a separate ad format from standard Google Ads. When someone searches for an eligible service in your area, Google can show a small set of verified local businesses at the top of the page, each with a rating, a badge and a button to call. You set a weekly budget and pay when a customer contacts you through the ad, rather than every time someone clicks.

Because the businesses are checked by Google before they can appear, the badge carries real weight with customers. For urgent services in particular, that trust can make the difference between the phone ringing or not.

Who is eligible in the UK

Local Services Ads are only available for certain service categories. In the UK, that list is weighted towards trades and home services, such as plumbers, electricians, locksmiths, roofers, cleaners, pest control and heating engineers. Google adds and changes categories regularly, so the most reliable check is the sign-up process itself, which tells you whether your category and area are covered.

Verification: start early

Before your ads go live, Google checks your business. In the UK, that typically includes business registration and insurance, plus relevant licences or qualifications where your trade requires them. The process can take several weeks, particularly if documents need resubmitting, so it is worth starting before you actually need the leads.

What affects your position

  • Proximity to the person searching.
  • Your review score and number of reviews, which is why a strong Google Business Profile matters here too.
  • Responsiveness: how often you answer calls and how quickly you reply.
  • Business hours: ads generally show when you are marked as open, so accurate hours matter.
  • Complaints about your service can push you down.

The practical lesson is simple: answer the phone. Missed leads cost you twice, once in the lost job and again in lower visibility.

Disputing poor leads

You should not have to pay for leads that are clearly not for your service, such as spam calls or enquiries for work you do not offer. Google provides a way to dispute these, and it is worth reviewing your leads every week and flagging the bad ones. Over a year, that adds up.

Local Services Ads or Search ads?

Local Services AdsSearch ads
You pay forLeads (calls, messages)Clicks
Control over keywordsVery little. Google matches by categoryFull control, including negatives
Need a website?NoYes, a good landing page is essential
Trust signalVerification badge and star ratingAd copy, extensions and your site
AvailabilityEligible categories onlyAlmost any legal business

For eligible businesses, I usually recommend running both. Local Services Ads cover the top of the page with a trusted badge, while Search ads cover the services, locations and searches that Local Services Ads do not reach.

What is changing

Google has started moving Local Services Ads into the main Google Ads platform, beginning in the United States. UK advertisers should expect changes to how campaigns are managed over the coming year. The fundamentals that drive results, a complete profile, strong reviews and fast responses, will not change, so keeping those in good order is the best preparation.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Local Services Ads lead cost?

It varies by trade, location and competition. Higher-value trades, such as roofing, tend to cost more per lead than lower-value services. You control the overall spend with a weekly budget.

Do I need a website for Local Services Ads?

No. Your ad is built from your Local Services profile and reviews. A good website still helps, because many people check you out before calling.

Can I run Local Services Ads and normal Google Ads together?

Yes, and for eligible businesses I usually recommend it. They appear in different places on the results page and cover different searches.
